Nigerian students excel at Robotics competition
Nigeria’s FIRST LEGO League and FTC Championship Draws Over 6,000 Participants 600 Students Advance to National Championship
Lagos, Nigeria – The latest season of the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Championship in Nigeria saw an incredible turnout with over 6,000 students from across the country participating in the competition. The event, organized by Coderina Education and Technology Foundation in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, National Senior Secondary Education (NSSEC), was designed to encourage students to engage in innovative problem-solving and creative thinking.
Of the 6,000 participants, over 600 advanced to the national championship where they showcased their robots, inventions, and research projects to a panel of judges and a supportive crowd. The students demonstrated their technical skills and creativity as they worked together to solve real-world problems, inspiring the next generation of leaders in STEM fields.
The FIRST LEGO League is focused on STEM education and is open to students aged 9 to 16, while the FTC competition is designed for older students, ages 12 to 18, and emphasizes the design and development of robots. These programs provide students with the opportunity to work together, learn from one another, and develop critical skills that will benefit them in their future careers.
The FTC season was made possible through the support of SAP and DOW, who provided the resources necessary for a successful event. With their support, the FIRST LEGO League and FTC Championship will continue to inspire future generations of scientists, engineers, and innovators in Nigeria.
“The response to the FIRST LEGO League and FTC Championship in Nigeria has been truly phenomenal,” said Olajide Ademola Ajayi (National Coordinator of the program), “We are proud to offer this competition as an opportunity for young people to develop their STEM skills, work together, and engage in meaningful problem-solving. The future of STEM is bright with these talented and motivated students.”
According to Mr. Andrew Adejoh, Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Education; the role of technology in education is transformative and it is essential for our students to be encouraged to take this seriously.
