In a significant move towards technological advancement, the Nigerian government has directed the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) to integrate robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) into the country’s basic education curriculum. This initiative marks a pivotal step in preparing Nigerian students for the ever-evolving tech-driven world.

Impressive Robotics Presentation

During a recent robotics project presentation at the Federal Ministry of Education, students from the Federal Government Girls College Sagamu, Ogun State, showcased their remarkable creation – a humanoid robot named Okikiola Sagamu. This AI marvel exhibited the ability to walk, recognize faces, shake hands, and engage in pleasantries, among other functions.

Government’s Encouragement

Impressed by this innovation, Mr. Andrew David Adejo, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, commended the Federal Government Colleges (Unity Schools) for their outstanding contributions to education in Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of “catching them young” and encouraged NERDC to incorporate coding, robotics, and AI into the basic education curriculum.

Adejo also urged the students and unity schools to take their innovation a step further by designing AI systems capable of taking orders and serving food in restaurants, with the assurance of government support.

Seeds of Technological Growth

Dr. Muyibat Adenike Olodo is the Director and Principal of FGGC Sagamu. She expressed her satisfaction with the efforts to expose students and coaches to cutting-edge technology trends like coding, AI, machine learning, and robotics. She attributed their success to the mentorship and technical assistance provided by Mr. Olajide Ademola Ajayi, the founder of Coderina Education and Technology Foundation.

We are trusted because we are at the forefront to deliver customised #codingforkids , #robotics, and #artificialintelligence for your wards.#kikisaggy #FGGCSagamu #code@sap4good @dowNewsroom @NigEducation @FIRSTLEGOLeague @Coderina @Ford @firstweets @LEGOFoundation#steam pic.twitter.com/B0B4D9Y9yX

Student Inspiration

Esther Ogunnaike, a participating student, praised their principal, Dr. Olodo, for establishing a robotics centre that enabled their innovative project. She urged the government to provide more resources to support their technological advancements.

A Bright Future

Nigeria’s forward-thinking initiative integrates robotics and AI into the basic curriculum, equipping its youth with essential skills for a tech-savvy world.
