Educating the Educators: Coderina’s FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Explore and Discover Workshop in Nigeria

Coderina organized a successful FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Explore and Discover training session for 50 teachers from different schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Friday, July 14, 2023 at Junior Secondary School, Hajj Camp, Gwagwalada.

FLL Explore and Discover are two of the four programs offered by FLL, a global robotics competition that challenges students aged 4 to 16 to solve real-world problems using LEGO bricks and technology. FLL Explore is for students aged 6 to 10, while FLL Discover is for students aged 4 to 6. Both programs aim to spark curiosity and creativity in young learners through playful learning and hands-on projects.

The training session was facilitated by Coderina’s staff and volunteers, who introduced the teachers to the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Explore and Discover curriculum, materials, and resources. The teachers learned how to use the LEGO Education Spike Essentials, Discover, Discover More and STEAM Park sets to engage their students in fun and meaningful STEM activities. They also learned how to guide their students to create their own models and stories based on the FLL Explore and Discover themes.

The training session was interactive and participatory, as the teachers had the opportunity to practice what they learned by building and programming their own LEGO models. They also shared their ideas and experiences with each other and received feedback from the facilitators. The teachers expressed their appreciation and excitement for the training, saying that it was very informative and inspiring.

At the end of the training session, Coderina distributed FLL Explore and Discover kits to each school that participated in the training. The kits will enable the teachers to train their students for an upcoming FLL Explore and Discover festival that will be held later this year. The festival will showcase the students’ projects and celebrate their achievements.

Coderina’s FLL Explore and Discover training session was part of its ongoing efforts to promote STEM education and innovation in Nigeria. Coderina believes that FLL Explore and Discover can help young students develop essential skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and creativity. Coderina also hopes that FLL Explore and Discover can inspire more students to pursue STEM careers in the future.
